StormHarvester Control Centre

  • StormHarvester’s control centre gets weather predictions from different meteorological agencies, including the British Met office.
  • They use an algorithm to estimate how much water will run off from upcoming rain events at specific sites.
  • The control centre then sends this info to the StormHarvester controller on-site automatically.

StormHarvester Controller

  • The StormHarvester controller gets messages from the control centre regularly, telling it the safe level of water in the lake, pond, or reservoir.
  • If the water level is too high, the system will open a valve or use pumps to lower it temporarily.

StormHarvester Display Portal

  • A portal shows real-time data and alerts from the system. This helps operational staff know what’s happening on-site and if there are any automatic actions being taken.
  • If there are any warnings, they can also be sent through text or email to the appropriate people, such as operatives or regulators.

StormHarvester’s technology predicts rain and runoff levels by checking weather forecasts and setting a “safe level” for water in the tank every 5 minutes. Usually, for light and brief rain, the system only lowers the water level a little bit, and the tank is usually already low since the water is being used on-site.

For intense rainfall (like cloudbursts), the system combines atmospheric pressure and rainfall predictions to determine when it will happen. Cloudbursts only occur when certain atmospheric pressure conditions are present, so the StormHarvester system monitors the forecasts and prepares for the storm by automatically draining tanks in the area at full capacity.

Failsafe systems

Battery back up in power failure scenario

The valve and site controller have rechargeable batteries that can keep the system working even when the power goes out. It can work without power for a few days. When power comes back on, the system will recharge the batteries automatically

System identifies and automatically reacts in coms failure scenario

The StormHarvester “controller” and “control centre” carry out system handshakes at 5-minute intervals ensuring that any loss in communications are quickly and automatically detected

Automatically detects valve blockages

The system automatically identifies partial and complete valve blockages and then alerts the infrastructure owner.

Automated Warning System

Emails and SMS are sent to pre-programmed phones and email addresses in the event of any failure, blockage or flood warning scenarios.
