Rising Main Alerting
Potential bursts activate an alert
AI-powered burst alerting for rising mains
Mains burst at
any time, but we
monitor all the time.
StormHarvester Rising Main Alerting is machine learning software that detects bursts, leaks and performance problems in wastewater rising mains (force mains) by analysing how the pumps that feed them behave.
It tracks a Pump Performance Indicator (PPI) for every pump and cross-references it with pressure, flow and pump efficiency data where available. A sudden, simultaneous drop in performance across the pumps on one main is a strong sign of a burst, while gradual declines point to issues such as passing non-return valves (NRVs) or poor pump synchronisation. Operators get an immediate alert, so crews can investigate, arrange tankering if needed and repair the main before it causes flooding or pollution.
Stay ahead of costly rising main failures
StormHarvester’s Rising Main Alerting uses advanced AI analytics and machine learning to spot anomalies in rising mains, triggering immediate alerts so teams can respond quickly, prevent damage, and protect the environment.
Early Detection
Detect potential bursts early to prevent damage, disruption, and environmental damage.
Faster Intervention
Respond quickly and reduce downtime across the network.
Optimise Network Performance
Analyse data both at pump stations and discharge points to improve performance.
How rising main alerting works
Rising Main Alerting continuously monitors data from pump stations, rising mains and discharge points, cross-referencing flow, pressure, and pump efficiency data to flag anomalies or downward trends. If issues with NRVs or pump synchronisation are flagged, StormHarvester alerts enable rapid investigation, helping you act before issues cause disruption.

How AI rising main burst detection works, step by step
1. Connect existing telemetry
StormHarvester is sensor-agnostic. It uses the pump start and stop signals and wet well levels your pumping stations already send, plus pressure data where it is available.
2. Track pump performance
Machine learning builds a Pump Performance Indicator for every pump feeding the main, learning how each one normally performs over time and in different weather.
3. Recognise the burst signature
When all pumps on a main lose performance at the same moment, the cause is usually downstream in the main itself. A single pump declining on its own points to a pump problem instead.
4. Alert, locate and repair
Crews get an immediate burst alert for the affected main, so they can investigate, arrange tankering to protect the environment and get the repair scheduled quickly.
Rising main alerting in action
Southern Water, UK: burst found 190 m from the pumping station
The performance indicator for both pumps dropped at the same time and StormHarvester raised a burst alert. An initial site visit found nothing obvious, but the alert held. A work order was raised, proactive tankering began, and the burst was confirmed on site 190 m from the pumping station, then repaired with performance restored.

case studies
Our solutions drive transformative results for wastewater utilities, municipalities and environmental agencies, helping organisations meet regulatory, environmental, operational goals while protecting the environment.
Yorkshire Water
In 2024, Yorkshire Water recognised that reactive alarm and incident management was no longer sustainable. Alarm noise was consuming operational capacity and crowding out proactive work. By embedding StormHarvester, the utility set out to build a proactive, insight-led way of working that could keep pace with future requirements without adding complexity.
Southern Water
Southern Water replaced a system overwhelmed by noise with one built for signal. With StormHarvester’s Pump Station Alerting, alert accuracy reached 88% turning out-of-hours reactive callouts into planned, targeted responses during normal working hours.
South West Water
South West Water cut their blockage detection trial short not because it wasn’t working, but because it was working so well they moved straight to full deployment. They’ve since expanded from 300 sites to 1,500 overflow points across the network.
